The city of Nancy is located in north eastern France. It is considered the intellectual and artistic capital of the Lorraine region. The earliest signs of settlement date back to 800 BC. The city of Nancy is known for its beautiful architecture, with the cathedral of Nancy, the Triumphal Arch and the Place de la Carriere all being good examples of 18th century architecture. Place Stansilas is a large pedestrian square in the center of Nancy, surrounded by a variety of historical buildings. The square itself is frequently used for a variety if public assemblies and festivities. Visitors should be sure to visit the square at night too, as the atmosphere is distinctly different in the evening. The architecture most closely associated with the city of Nancy is Art Nouveau. Students enrolled in French school in Nancy will quickly learn the role that Emile Galle, a master glassmaker, played in forming the School of Nancy, an association of artists whose goal was to find art in everything. Students taking French courses in Nancy will enjoy sampling the local cuisine. Of course the Lorraine area is known for its Quiche Lorraine, but there are also many other local delights to be found. In the evenings, there is a variety of night clubs and dance clubs that quickly fill with the local student population.
