It is birthplace of Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love, which is very telling since so many people have fallen for it time and time again. Take Greek courses in Cyprus and join the love affair with this historically significant island. Still hotly debated between Greece and Turkey, the Cyprus culture melds the two together particularly in the capital Nicosia. Beyond the modern cuisine and lively neighborhoods, check out the Venetian walls of Nicosia, the Pancyprian Gymnasium and Buyuk Han caravansary. For more historical sites, admire the gothic castles of Buffavento and Kantara, as well as the archaeological ruins at Ancient Salamis, one of the ancient city kingdoms. Visit the Tombs of Kings in Pafos and observe their morbid and mysterious mosaics. Stay fit walking the wild Karpas Peninsula and trekking the trails of Troödos Massif. On the trek, stop and see the protected frescoes of Byzantine churches. Religion plays a major role in Cyprus life and mosques and monasteries can be found throughout the island. Cyprus is the perfect place to employ all the senses – smell the citrus groves and spring wildflowers, see the fairytale-like St Hilarion Castle, taste delicious Halloumi cheese and lokum, listen to traditional Greco-Turkish folk music, and feel the warm Mediterranean waters. The latter can be encountered in the beach towns of Agia Napa and Lemesos (Limasol). After a day attending Greek school in Cyprus head down to one of these great beaches and join the locals and tourists for a night of fun.
