Baku is the capital city of Azerbaijan, and the largest port of Caucasus, a geopolitical region at the border of Europe and Asia. Students taking Azerbaijani courses in Baku will find Baku to be a true blend of East and West. With the modern found right next to the ancient, there is much to see. A visit to the Old City part of Baku, which dates back at least to the 12th century, allows students to see an important historical monument, the Maiden Tower. The Maiden Tower houses a museum detailing the history of Baku. Also within the Old City, visitors can find shops selling antiques and carpets. There is even a carpet workshop museum, displaying an amazing collection of carpets for visitors to peruse. A trip to the Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape is another interesting site. Visitors can see ancient carvings and relics among other things. Meanwhile, on the modern side of things, Baku is also a city of business, being the primary financial hub of Azerbaijan. Students attending Azerbaijani school in Baku should be sure to sample the local cuisine while staying in Baku. With Georgian, Iranian, Turkish and Central Asian influences, the food in Azerbaijan makes good use of spices. Dolma is a common dish, which contains lamb meat wrapped in grape or cabbage leaves. Visitors to Baku can expect to experience a semi-arid climate. Typically this means hot, dry summers and occasionally wet winters, because of its location on a peninsula on the shore of the Caspian Sea.
